Halloween Costume

This year was one of my most- no- it IS the most elaborate costumes of my life.
I was inspired by a dress I saw online of a beautiful blue victorian gown with peacock feathers and makeup, so I decided to do my own version of the same thing.
I used a Simplicity Historic pattern for a Victorian Bustle Dress in bright blue and green colors.
I found a packet of 100 peacock feathers online for $30.
It took quite a lot of time to finish the dress.  I am by no means a pro seamstress.  My mom and sister always have been, so I usually need to be; but I could not ask someone else to take on such a huge task without pay.  So it was down to me.
I have had experience with a sewing machine- don't get me wrong- but my understanding of the why's and how's and what's of sewing is only about 10%.  So I don't want you to think that I just whipped this dress up like a piece of cake.  It was hard. My mom kept finding mistakes.  My mom kept fixing them until she completely took over the task of making the bodice.  It probably would have brought me to tears.
But in the end- I had a dress to be proud of.
I love when people compliment how beautiful it is- but I hate when they tell me how great I am at sewing- because I am not.
Oh- and I forgot to say that somewhere in the middle of all that sewing late on a friday night, I sewed right through my finger.  I have never had ANY traumatic injuries of any kind, this was crazy.  Its not terribly painful (its just like slamming your finger in a door) but it was rather stomach-churning to unwind the machine to extract the needle out of my nail.  Gross.  5 minutes later I felt like I was going to be sick.
I wore a finger brace just to keep myself from using it or putting pressure on it.
So- all the work and blood and sweat went into this dress- and here is the final result.  Thanks to my Dad for taking some wonderful pictures.  I need more people in my life who will indulge my photoshoot fantasies.
